Ok, I know I'm not around for a while. However, I could manage to survive in this Global Economic Crisis (GEC in short). Some of you know that my very-self employed company, SYM Software runs totaly uninhibited. Thanx to AI technology and my self-unconsciousness, the company learned to survive without its employee, a.k.a. ME!

In fact, I got contracts, lose contract, and somehow survived. Here is the challenge ahead of me now: I'm gonna invent the next big thing! I invent, they invest, that's the way it is. Thus, to thrust it up, I'm seeking the next big thing.

Hi there again,

It's been almost 2 month since the last post. Just to catch up, here is the list of few things I've done:

1) Coded with Ruby (on Rails, of course)
2) Started to use Expression (Blend) and WPF
3) Started to use Silverlight
4) Delayed on UCF project
5) Tended, but did not accomplish, writing new articles and air new webinars.
6) and attended several events and conferences...

You may ask why, but the answer is good enough, I've been studying, but I've passed the Ph.D. capability exam. Now I'm capable of studying Ph.D. thesis :) that I'm glad of it...

MS announced the release of Silverlight, a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering the next generation of media experiences and rich interactive applications (RIAs) for the Web. Possibly, that's sound interesting, but I remember something similar to Silverlight at a presentation of a very popular IT company which produces fancy stuff for geeks with a fruit logo on them. Could you name it?

I Want You!...an OpenJDK Story

First look at the official slide above, then look at the OpenJDK project (especially JDK7), and tell me what tha hell's going on!

I really irritated with this effort at Sun. I think they should immediately anounce their strategy on JDK, because we, the millions of Java developer, have right to know!

To me, opensource JDK have disadvantages over its advantages. Because we're talking about billions $ worth of investment on software sytems designed to run on JDK. In my opinion, opensourcing JDK will have a deep impact on maintenance of these system. For instance, we're developing an ERP system and even now, we have compatibility problems among different JREs. I hear you saying it's normal, then check this out: we submitted a symptom and there was the great answer replied by Sun: There may be a bug! May be a bug? pfff...Think about the future cases.

Ok, Sun have right to opensource a software, or delegate its development responsibilities to 3rd parties. But, there should be a mechanism that controls these efforts on JDK. I don't think this is JSR. There should some other pro-active mechanism that will guide us all.

On the other hand, JDK7 have huge code opensourced to 3rd parties. I mean you can even develop your own VM and RTE. However, as a software company having a product line, is this my responsibility to perform maintenance on VM and RTE? Otherwise, there is a huge problem of security. It's irrelevant that your system's security audit's OK, since the all runtime exposed to 3rd parties, and as usual case, there are whole bunch of bugs and holes in it.

So, those problems need urgent attention.

Beside, one of my students asked me once isn't saying platform independent mean it's VM dependent?
I couldn't answer this question that time. But now I'm answering: Yes my friend, you're right to the ground!

Simplicity for Integrity

I'm using both .NET and Java in my projects. Although I've earned my life teaching and using .NET in the past, nowadays, I'm earning my life from Java (I'm still teaching and using .NET, however).

By the way, I've no UI design ability (you should see my UI designs for a second, they're terrible), because I devoted my self to server-side development (background services, communication and networking etc.)

Thus, I do really love WCF. But, what about Java Web Service development? So, I've decided to design and develop a unified communication framework for Java. That's it! No more complex server deployments, no more dozens of XML config files, and no more use of piles of APIs for exposing and consuming just one method.

The motto is "simplicity for integrity"

WebSphere thing and few words about software factories

Recently, I've ported an AXIS web service to WebSphere Application Server. Although it may seem nothing to worry about, it's definetely not!

First, WebSphere does not recommend AXIS for WS runtime. Second, J2EE deployment for a WS is not easy as deploying on Tomcat or JWSDP.

After a few trials, I've accomplished the job. However, as I always do, here is the verdict:

I've created a business logic subsystem -again- for WebSphere. It has two option with two methods: Either using JavaBean or stateless session beans, and create ws either bottom-up (start with bean) or top-down (start with WSDL). However, my AXIS WSDL is not compliant with WebSphere's JAX-RPC runtime (as expected), I created (could not be able to REUSE) the business logic.

As many J2EE projects, there are whole bunch of artifacts created and spreaded everywhere. Several config files, some java code and many other artifacts injected into AppServer. So, for instance changing a name,a mapping or something, is not easily managable.

Therefore, it immediately remind me to the need for Software Factories. I think SF for Web Service is a need for us all...Although .NET's WS approach is much more clear than Java approach. Folks at MS released a "SF for WS" using either ASMX or WCF. I've tried the WCF version and result is great (wait for WCF tutorial)

As you know, I'm preparing to seminar. However, like a parallel processor, I'm preparing a detailed WCF tutorial which covers basic to intermediate subjects. Just to name, it includes the whole lifecycle (designing, development, deployment/hosting and testing) for WCF. The most of the questions asked to me are about hosting of WCF. So this will be highlighted in tutorial.

In one sentence, WCF is everything needed in your backpack on your way to distribued computing.

Microsoft announced Visual Studio 2005 SDK 4.0 released. This new release includes usual tools but enhanced versions. You can check the new features out by clicking here

New and Updated in the February 2007 "v4" Release
The Visual Studio 2005 SDK 4.0 now includes an SDK Browser to enhance the overall experience with Visual Studio extensibility development and to connect users with the community and online contents.

The Package Load Failure (PLF) Analyzer is now included with the SDK. The PLF Analyzer can do a complete analysis of package load failures and present the diagnostic information to the user.

A Toolbox Control Installer is now included with the SDK. This is a redistributable package that Toolbox component vendors can include in their Setup programs to simplify the deployment of their components. A new sample (Example.InstallToolboxControls) has been included to demonstrate this functionality.

The IronPython sample now recognizes external line mapping comments. These come in the form of #ExternalSource(“filename”, lineNumber) and are ended with a #EndExternalSource comment. This format matches the format of the C# compiler and is used for a similar purpose. Errors reported on lines in an ExternalSource region will include file name and line number information based on the ExternalSource comment. This enables scenarios such as ASP.NET code-behind where the source code from the Web page is inserted into generated code in another file.

Documentation improvements include a new Visual Studio SDK Guided Tour, new Visual Studio Package Load Failure Analyzer documentation, new Command Bar Combo Box code sample documentation, a new Toolbox Controls Installer tutorial, and considerations for developing and running solutions on Windows Vista.

There and back again...A .NET Conversion tale

I've used Java Language Conversion Assistant today. It's really amazing to see whole project's conversion to .NET. Although there are issues especially on UI packages, those are minor and could easily be handled with a little refactoring. I'd like express my gratitudes to all buddies involved in development of this tool. The most impressing thing was to see whole RMI stuff (which the project has its own implementation of RMIRegistry and rest) are converted to .NET Remoting without a problem. Really amazing...

I'm preparing to a seminar on Domain Specific Languages and Software Factories. The seminar will be hold in Microsoft Turkey office, but the date is not clear yet. The details will be anounced soon at msakademik.net and this blog site.

DSL technology is known and used technology for a while. However, with Visual Studio 2005, DSL is exposed with its power when backed with Software Factories. The leaders of this initiative at MS are Jack Greenfield, Steve Cook and Keith Short. In this seminar, topics included are what is DSL, why to use DSL, practical DSL considerations, the Software Factories concept, using DSL in conjunciton with Software Factories, etc.

SaaS and Dependency Injection

Lately, I've been working on Spring.NET to figure out the possibilities of DI-SaaS relationship. Since we all are talking on Software as a Service thing, let's try to understand the requirements.

First, we need software components to be used as a service, those components should satisfy some requirements. The re-usability is the key, but it is not enough to have a generic/common design. Re-usability relies on dynamic configuration at runtime.

Second, Software components should expose their functionality over standard mechanisms. Thus, any type of configurable software component could be able to use them.

Third, configuration on-the-fly shouldn't require you to go back design-time. Which, configuration itself should be self-configurable.

Therefore, It's better to use Spring kind-of (pico or Avalon, too) framework to make it easy to interchange your components into service elements. This is my tought of course, but if you read MFowler's famous article on DI/IoC you can see for yourself.

Synchronization among old and new

A friend at MSDN asked how to design a synchronization mechanism for legacy db and "new" db. What I thought first was the data transportation. I mean, your application could construct such a chain-of-responsibility and proxy like structures which can switch the DB on-the-fly. You can construct an application logic such as trying to extract data from legacy if it fails then check on application db on read cycles. And, try to insert on both parties by firing just one command on write cycles. But be sure to keep log on operations and use transactions on both reading and writing. Such an approach might help you to run reliable.

The last but the most important thing is to keep in mind that such transportation tasks (r/w from some data source) usually introduces so many trade-offs. For instance, you'd probably have comm and resource mngmt costs on the solution above. But, hey, you've to choose an end on trade-off (performance vs. reliability)

I did not want to show off, but I switched to Vista Business. Then, as usual, I installed VS.NET 2005 onto it. However, Vista warns me that VS might have compliance problems. Then I figure out that there is a beta SP for this issue... But it seems awkward to me since VS 2005 is the only supported platform for developing .NET 3.0 and Windows SDK. On the other hand, Vista is barely enhanced and matured than XP.

Load Balancing issues...

Let say you design a distributed software application, and you decided to add a load balancing feature on it. Probably, you'd like to consider network latencies, rules, etc. This load balancer will forwards connections to appropriate endpoint. Then client starts to use that endpoint. But what about binary transfers? How you can handle, let say, file transfers? I mean, if you dynamically forward client to different endpoints each time, how those r/w cycles could be handled for file/data sync. Isn't it creates additional network costs and decreases the benefits of loadbalancer? Do you have any idea? Please mail me your thoughts.

Nope, I'm not gonna talk about SOA in this post. I only mention few things about service concept.

Let say somehow (whatever you selected to implement a service, might be CORBA or Web Services) you gonna implement a service. The first thing you should consider is the Quality of the Service. Without any sign of quality of your service (sign of quality??? that's another story) that your application would be built upon it, it's not possible to make your application's customers happy.

Furthermore, another thing you should consider when building a web service is easiness of maintenance and management.

My point is,

1. If you consider to create a service, think on dependencies. Because stability is the main point of services. If your service is not stable, then what is it good for?
2. Do not try to, or force to, use Web Services just for show off and say that "we're using SOA, aren't you?" geek. Is Web Service the right enabler? Consider more reliable and mature distributed computing technologies like RMI, CORBA etc. Because SOA isn't Web Services or vice versa.

As far as i figure it out from e-mails, everybody confused about SOA phenomena.

To me, this is normal, since SOA just jumped into our regular developer life.

Some people consider SOA as a software development methodology while others take it as an implementation issue. I think both approaches are right.

Before getting into it, let's flashback several years ago and think about web services thing. Those days were the Web Services day where everybody were trying to inject this new concept into their applications and the mainstream of development was "integration" and "consolidation" was the gold biz-hype. Right after those days, everybody then switched on the interfacing those web service-enable systems with each other. Then, some biz-people backed by technical geeks, tried to name this phenomena with a fancy name. So this is the story.

Because of this light-speed shift, everybody got confused on SOA thing. Some people tried to expose and focus on integrating the services methodologicaly, and others tried to mark the implementation strategies. And even more confused ones tried to explain the subject as Web Services = SOA.

This is the all story from my point of view.
